iGaming content in Italy: questions to ask before a brief.

Why editorial intent, distribution and commercial context need a review before creative work begins.

Begin with the actual activity

“Gaming content” can describe very different things. A discussion of game design, a review of streaming hardware and a paid endorsement of a real-money gambling service are not interchangeable. Write down the product, intended audience, payment relationship, proposed message and distribution before assessing a brief.

Understand the regulatory starting point

AGCOM describes a broad Italian prohibition on gambling advertising, including indirect advertising and social-media distribution. The relevant framework and its interpretation must be assessed for the particular activity. Calling material educational, adding a commercial disclosure or limiting the audience to adults does not by itself establish that a promotion is allowed.

Review the whole content journey

A script is only part of the context. Descriptions, pinned comments, links, overlays, incentives, affiliate relationships and later reuse may change how an activity is understood. Review the complete proposed publication and the parties involved. Do not approve an isolated script while leaving the surrounding distribution unexamined.

Create an approval record

Agree who owns legal review, platform-policy review and final publication approval. Preserve the approved brief and a version of the final asset. Set a process for stopping publication if material changes or a new distribution request appears. Written decisions make it easier to understand what was assessed and what was outside scope.

Know when the answer is no

Research and measurement can help a business understand an audience without making a prohibited promotion acceptable. If an activity cannot proceed, document the decision and consider whether an independent research question remains useful. Do not replace a rejected placement with a disguised version of the same message.
